The captains at the first Ryder Cup match in 1927 were Walter Hagen (USA) and Ted Ray (Great Britain). Both men were playing captains. The last playing captain was Arnold Palmer in 1961.

Tony Jacklin is the only man to captain three consecutive wnning Ryder Cup teams while the following have all won it back-to-back: Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, and Luke Donald.
