The two leading men´s professional season-long Golf Tours are the PGA Tour, based in North America, and the PGA European Tour, currently called the DP World Tour.

Other Tours include the Asian and Japan Golf Tours, the PGA Tours of Australasia and the South African Sunshine Tour. There is also the North American-based PGA Tour Champions and the European Legends Tour for seniors golfers (see Seniors Golf section), and the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour (see Women's Golf section)

PGA TOUR
The PGA Tour goes back to 1916 following the formation of the Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA). Several big tournaments, including the Western Open, PGA Championship, and US Open, were contested between April and October that year with the English professional Jim Barnes winning the first "Tour" event, the North and South Open at Pinehurst

In 1965 the newly established Tournament Players Division broke away from the PGA to form its own tour and in 1975 named it the PGA Tour, which remains its name today.

The British Open became part of the PGA Tour in 1995, and all winners since its inauguration in 1860, have been retrospectively classed as PGA Tour winners, as have all winners of the US Open from its formation in 1895. All four Majors form part of the PGA Tour.

In 2025, a total of 46 official events made up the PGA Tour and prize money totalled in excess of $400 million.

Babe Zaharias made history in 1938 as the first woman to play in a PGA Tour event (Los Angeles Open) and seven years later, in the same event,  became the first woman to make the 36-hole cut in a Tour event.

PGA EUROPEAN TOUR
Although known simply as the “European Tour “ its current style is the “DP World Tour” because of a sponsorship deal since 2021 with DP World, a Dubai-based logistics company.

The original Tour was established in 1972 by the Professional Golfers´ Association of Great Britian and Ireland and in 1984 the PGA European Tour became independent from the PGA. Since 1998 the three US Majors have formed part io the European Tour and many golfers play on both the US and European Tours each year.

The 2025 European Tour consisted of 42 official events with prizemoney in excess of €130 million. Back in 1972, when Spain’s Antonio Garrido became the first European Tour winner he collected a prize of €2,072 for winning the Spanish Open at Golf de Pals, the first golf course on Spain’s Costa Brava.
