The inaugural US PGA Championship was held at Siwanoy Country Club, New York in 1916, and won by Jim Barnes. Due to World War I, there was no competition in 1917 and 1918. From its beginning until 1957, the event was a match-play competition. The first winner of the current stroke-play format was Dow Finsterwald in 1958.

The PGA was traditionally the last io the four Majors played in Autumn each year but in 2019 it was moved to a Spring date and is now the second Major each year after the Masters. Unlike the other three Majors, amateurs are not invited to compete in the PGA Championship.

The last man to win back-to-back US Open Championships was Brooks Koepka as above
