The PGA Championship’s first play-off was at Olympia Fields in 1961 when Jerry Barber beat Don January by one stroke after 18 extra holes.
Lanny Wadkins and Don January are the only men to have won and lost a play-off. Wadkins beat Gene Littler in 1977 and lost to Larry Nelson in 1987. January lost to Barber in the first play-off in 1961 and beat Don Massengale in 1967. No man has either won, or lost, two play-offs.
In the match-play era, only three finals went beyond the regulated 36 holes, and all were resolved at the second extra hole when Gene Sarazen beat Walter Hagen in 1923, Paul Runyan beat Craig Wood in 1934, and Vic Ghezzi beat Byron Nelson in 1941, all at the 38th hole. |
