Inaugurated in 1955 as the LPGA Championship. The first year consisted of three rounds of stroke play followed by 18 holes of match-play to decide the winner, which was Beverly Hanson (USA) who beat fellow American Louise Suggs 4 & 3. All subsequent Championships have been stroke play over four scheduled rounds of 18 holes.
The Championship was renamed the Women’s PGA Championship after 2014 and it has also carried the name of the event’s sponsor, British accounting firm KPMG, with it now being styled as the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.
The PGA has been one of the women’s Majors since inception and like the other Majors held in the USA (US Open and Chevron Championship), the PGA Championship is not part of the Women’s European Tour
