Inaugurated in 1946, the US Women’s Open has been recognised as a Major since the launch of the LPGA in 1950 and is the oldest of the current five Women’s Majors. All Open winners between 1946-49 have retrospectively been granted Major status,
In its first year, the Women’s Open consisted of 36 holes of stroke play followed by a match-play knockout tournament featuring the top 32 players after the stroke play element. Patty Berg led the stroke play section by 13 shots after the opening 36 holes and then sailed through the knockout to beat Betty Jameson (USA) 5 & 4 in the inaugural final. That was the only time match-play conditions were used, all subsequent events have been 72 holes under stroke play conditions.
Like the other Majors held in the USA each year (US PGA and Chevron Championship), the US Women’s Open is not part of the Women’s European Tour
