Golf´s leading team event is the biennial Ryder Cup Match between the United States and Europe. Because of its history, and mass appeal, we have devoted a whole section of this site to the event and records and lists can be found here.
PRESIDENTS CUP
Similar to the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup was inaugurated in 1994 and is held every two years between teams of 12 golfers from the United States and and the Rest of the World, excluding players from Europe.
DUNHILL CUP
A short-lived event, the Dunhill Cup, lasted from 1985-2000. Played annually over the Old Course at St Andrews it attracted some big names in men's professional golf. A total of 16 three-man teams took part each year and all matches were under stroke play conditions.
WORLD CUP
A leading international tournament for many years until its eventual demise in 2018. The World Cup was inaugurated as The Canada Cup in 1953 before a change of name in 1967. It was a stroke play event played by two-man teams representing countries from all over the world.
WALKER CUP
The leading men's team tournament for male amateurs, the Walker Cup pre-dates the Ryder Cup by five years having first being played at the National Golf Links of the USA in 1922. There had previously been an unofficial between the two countries the day before The 1921 British Amateur Championship at the Royal Liverpool.
EISENHOWER TROPHY
The Eisenhower Trophy is presented to the world men's amateur team champions every two years. Inaugurated in1958 the trophy is named after the former USA President. Currently restricted to 36 teams of three who each play 72 holes with the lowest aggregate score of the best two deciding the final places.
EUROPEAN AMATEUR TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
The European Amateur Team Championship was inaugurated in 1959. A maximum of 16 teams of six players take part annually and the event is played firstly to stroke play rules and then the top eight teams take part in a match-play knockout competition
SOLHEIM CUP
The Solheim Cup is the women’s equivalent of the men’s Ryder Cup, and is the senior team event in professional women's golf. Launched in 1990 it is a biennial event like its male counterpart, and is played with a similar format with 12 players each from the USA and Europe.
CURTIS CUP
Like its make counterpart, the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup is a biennial contest for amateur teams from the United States (USA) and Great Britain & Ireland (GB&I). After three unofficial matches between the two countries, the first official match was in 1932. All matches are currently played to a match-play format with foursomes, fourballs, and singles played over three days.
ESPIRITO SANTO TROPHY
The Espirito Santo Trophy is presented to the World Women's Amateur Team Champions every two years. Inaugurated in 1964 the first event was held at the St. Germain Golf Club in France and won by the host nation. The trophy is named after the Portuguese banker Ricardo Espirito Santo who donated the trophy.
EUROPEAN LADIES TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
An amateur team competition for member countries of the European Golf Association (EGA). The first European Ladies Team Championship took place at Cologne, Germany, in 1959 and won by France. It was held every two years until 2007 after which it became an annual event.
